In many different cultures around the world, there are wedding traditions that date back centuries, with deep seated beliefs that have been passed on from generation to generation. - The Bride’s Floral Bouquet – This is perhaps the most common of all the wedding customs and traditions that are adopted around the world and its roots are said to stem from carrying flowers to ward off evil spirits. - The Bridesmaids – No wedding would be complete without the traditional bridesmaids and this tradition began in the Roman times, when single girls were dressed in similar attire to the bride, which would confuse any evil spirits (or other male suitors). - The Wedding Rings – This age old tradition used to be a sign of ownership to let everyone know that the lady in question is spoken for. - Something Old, New, Borrowed and Blue – This custom dates back to the Victorian Era, when something old, new, borrowed and blue were traditionally worn at the same time by the bride. The old item symbolised the connection with the bride’s past, while the new item signified the new union she is about to enter into, and something borrowed should be from a happily married couple, as their good luck will be given to the newlyweds and finally, something blue was associated with loyalty and faithfulness.
Many couples today prefer to stick with tradition and incorporate many of the ancient marriage customs as they are believed to bring the couple good fortune and to ward off evil.
