In many different cultures around the world, there are wedding traditions that date back centuries, with deep seated beliefs that have been passed on from generation to generation. If you are soon to be married, the chances are that you and your partner will be taking part in many such traditional scenes. It might be the traditional ring cushion, or the throwing of the bride’s bouquet and if you would like to know more about wedding customs and traditions, here are a few of the more popular ones explained.

  1. The Bride’s Floral Bouquet – This is perhaps the most common of all the wedding customs and traditions that are adopted around the world and its roots are said to stem from carrying flowers to ward off evil spirits. When the bride throws her bouquet behind, the bridesmaid that manages to catch it is believed to be shortly following her friend down the aisle. There is a link to an informative article that looks in greater detail at the mysterious wedding traditions that people have created over the years.

  1. The Bridesmaids – No wedding would be complete without the traditional bridesmaids and this tradition began in the Roman times, when single girls were dressed in similar attire to the bride, which would confuse any evil spirits (or other male suitors). Of course, the bridesmaids are also there to give the bride moral support as she prepares to walk down the aisle.

  1. The Wedding Rings – This age old tradition used to be a sign of ownership to let everyone know that the lady in question is spoken for. Special designs using tiny diamonds clustered around a central stone have long been fashionable and if you are looking for one of those diamond engagement rings in Brisbane, there is an established jeweller who can customise both rings to suit the couple’s tastes.

  1. The Wedding Cake – Always the focal point of the reception, the wedding cake has a long and colourful history, which began with the groom taking a bite out of bread and the guests would gather around trying to catch some of the crumbs, which was believed to bring them good luck. Saving some of the wedding cake is also a popular tradition that has stood the test of time, so make sure that your wedding cake is large enough to accommodate this tradition.

  1. Something Old, New, Borrowed and Blue – This custom dates back to the Victorian Era, when something old, new, borrowed and blue were traditionally worn at the same time by the bride. The old item symbolised the connection with the bride’s past, while the new item signified the new union she is about to enter into, and something borrowed should be from a happily married couple, as their good luck will be given to the newlyweds and finally, something blue was associated with loyalty and faithfulness.

Many couples today prefer to stick with tradition and incorporate many of the ancient marriage customs as they are believed to bring the couple good fortune and to ward off evil.
